Founded in 1996, the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics coordinates the research activities of the Fraunhofer institutes working in the fields of microelectronics and microintegration and is an overall representation of these institutes. The Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics is one of the nine research groups of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Since April 2017, eleven Fraunhofer institutes of the Microelectronics Group have been working together with two Leibniz institutes FBH and IHP as the "Research Fab Microelectronics Germany" (FMD). As a One-Stop-Shop, FMD combines the scientifically excellent technologies, applications and system solutions of the cooperating institutes into a combined overall offer in the field of micro- and nanoelectronics.
The activities of the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics and the FMD are coordinated by the joint office in Berlin. Its staff is the point of contact for representatives from research, industry and politics as well as for the cooperation partners. The office team is also responsible for the developing cross-technological and cross-institutional R&D concepts, for acquiring and coordinating selected cross-institutional projects, and for public relations.
